Lewis Miley (born 1 May 2006) is an English professionalfootballer who plays mainly as acentral-midfielder forPremier League clubNewcastle United and theEngland under-20 national team. Mainly acentral-midfielder, he can also be deployed either as aattacking-midfielder ordefensive-midfielder.
Miley joined theNewcastle United Academy at the age of seven. He made hisfirst-team debut in a friendly againstAl Hilal in 2022.[2] In November 2022, he won the club's Jack Hixon Award for most promising youngster.[3] Miley first appeared in the senior match day squad as a substitute in aPremier League fixture againstAFC Bournemouth in February 2023. He signed his first professional contract for the club in May 2023.[4]
Miley made his Premier League debut on 28 May 2023. Coming on as a 76th minute substitute againstChelsea, he became Newcastle United's youngest ever Premier League player.[5]
On 27 September, Miley started a competitive first team game for the first time in a 1–0 win overManchester City in the third round of theEFL Cup.[6] On 7 November, he made hisChampions League debut, coming off the bench in the 81st minute, in a 2–0 defeat againstBorussia Dortmund, becoming the youngest Newcastle United player to feature in European competitions, aged 17 years and 191 days, breaking previous record ofAdam Campbell.[7] On 11 November, Miley was named in the starting lineup for the first time in the Premier League in a 2–0 loss against AFC Bournemouth.[8]
On 25 November, Miley played 90 minutes, getting his first Premier League goal contribution by assistingAlexander Isak's opening goal in a 4–1 win against Chelsea atSt James' Park. At the age of 17 years and 208 days, he became the youngest ever Newcastle United player to assist a Premier League goal.[9] Three days later, he started his first Champions League match, which ended in a 1–1 away draw againstParis Saint-Germain, becoming the third youngest Englishman to start in that competition afterJude Bellingham andPhil Foden.[10]
Amidst a large number of player injuries at the club, from mid-November Miley became a consistent feature in the starting lineups, being praised by club managerEddie Howe as a player who "straight away looked part of the group", with a "brilliant brain".[11]
On 13 December, during the final Champions League group stage matchday againstMilan, Miley made history by becoming the youngest player in UEFA Champions League history to provide an assist for an English club at the age of 17 years and 226 days.[12] Three days later, he scored his first goal for Newcastle in a 3–0 win overFulham, in which he became the youngest player to score in the Premier League sinceFederico Macheda in 2009, and the youngest ever player to score for Newcastle in that competition.[13]
On 29 January, Miley signed a new long-term contract with the club.[14]
Miley was first called up to represent England for the 2022Nordic Championship with theunder-17 team, playing matches againstNorway U16,Faroe Islands U17 andFinland U17.[15] His first international goal came against Finland in a 2–1 win.[16] He helped England toqualify for the2023 UEFA European Under-17 Championship with caps in March 2023.[17]
Miley was part of the preliminary England squad for the 2023 UEFA European Under-17 Championship but was withdrawn byNewcastle United in order to feature on the bench for the first team in a league fixture againstBrighton & Hove Albion.[18]
On 6 September 2023, Miley made hisEngland U19 debut during a 1–0 defeat toGermany inOliva.[19]
On 22 March 2024, Miley made his debut for theEngland Elite League squad during a 5–1 win overPoland at theBiałystok Municipal Stadium.[20]
On 15 November 2024, after recently returning from a back injury, Miley made his debut for theEngland under-21 team as a second half substitute in a 0-0 draw withSpain.[21]
Miley was born inStanley, County Durham, and was educated atTanfield School. He is a boyhood supporter ofNewcastle United.[2] His older brother,Jamie, is also a footballer who plays for Hartlepool United.[22]
