Lewie Polk Steinberg[a] (September 13, 1933 – July 21, 2016)[2] was an American musician best known as the originalbass guitar player for thesoul music groupBooker T. & the M.G.'s.

Steinberg was born inMemphis, Tennessee toBaptist parents.

He joined Booker T. & the MG's in 1962. He was featured on "Green Onions" and its B-side, "Behave Yourself", as well as the albumsGreen Onions andSoul Dressing. Steinberg left the group in 1965 and was replaced byDonald "Duck" Dunn.

Steinberg was inducted into theRock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, as a member of Booker T. & the M.G.'s.[3]

Personal life

Steinberg received aGrammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Steinberg died from cancer on July 21, 2016, in Memphis, at the age of 82.[4][5]
