The white-tailed flycatcher wasformally described in 1836 by the German naturalistSalomon Müller based on a specimen collected in the interior of the west coast of Sumatra. Müller placed the species in the genusMuscicapa and coined thebinomial nameMuscicapa concreta.[2][3] The specific epithetconcretum is fromModern Latinconcretus meaning "large", "sturdy" or "strong". It comes fromMedieval Latinconcretus meaning "concrete".[4] The white-tailed flycatcher was previously assigned to the genusCyornis but based on evidence frommolecular phylogenetic studies the species is now placed in its ownmonotypic genusLeucoptilon that was introduced in 2021 byGeorge Sangster and collaborators.[5][6] The genus name combines theAncient Greek λευκος/leukos meaning "white" with πτιλον/ptilon meaning "feather".[7]
