Leucophaeus is a smallgenus of medium-sizedNew Worldgulls, most of which are dark in plumage, usually with white crescents above and below the eyes. They were placed in the genusLarus until recently.[2] The genus nameLeucophaeus is fromAncient Greekleukos, "white", andphaios, "dusky".[3]
