Leo Rolly Carnando (born 29 July 2001) is an Indonesianbadminton player affiliated withPB Djarum club.[1][2] He was aWorld Junior Champions in the mixed doubles in2018 and in the boys' doubles in2019,[3] also won double gold at the2019 Asian Junior Championships in the boys' and mixed doubles events.[4] Carnando was part of Indonesia winning team at the2020 Thomas Cup.[5]

Career

Carnando was selected to join theDjarum club in 2015. He has focused on playing in the doubles category. In 2016, he won the boys' doubles titles at the USM Flypower Open, Astec Open Badminton Championships and Singapore Youth International Series. He also won the mixed doubles title at the Walikota Surabaya Open, National circuit in Lampung and West Java. In 2017, he clinched double title by winning the U17 boys' and mixed doubles events at the Jaya Raya Indonesia Junior International, then won the boys' doubles title at the Walikota Surabaya Bank Jatim Victor Open, National circuit in North Sulawesi, and also the mixed doubles title at the National circuit in Central Java.[2]

Carnando was selected to join the Indonesia National training center in 2018.[6] He alongside Indonesia team won the bronze medal at theAsian Junior Championships in Jakarta. Unfortunately, in the individual events, he was defeated in the early stage.[7][8] Carnando claimed his first title in the BWF sanctioned tournament at the India Junior International, where he andDaniel Marthin beat their compatriotPramudya Kusumawardana and Ghifari Anandaffa Prihardika in the final.[9] A week later, the duo won the Malaysia International Junior Open.[10] In November, he won the gold medal in the mixed doubles with partnerIndah Cahya Sari Jamil at theMarkham World Junior Championships. It was a surprise, because they entered the tournament as an unseeded pair, having only paired a few months earlier.[11][12] While in the team event, he helped Indonesia win the bronze medal.[13] Carnando claimed his first senior International title by winning theBangladesh International in both mixed and men's doubles.[14] He then reached two finals in theTurkey International, and won a title in the men's doubles.[15] For his achievements in 2018, Carnado was nominated as Eddy Choong Most Promising Player of the Year with Marthin,[16] and was named Djarum Outstanding Young Athlete with Jamil.[17]

In March 2019, Carnando finished as runner-up in the boys' doubles withDaniel Marthin in the German Junior.[18] In May, he clinched two titles at the Jaya Raya Junior Grand Prix, winning the boys' doubles with Marthin, and in the mixed doubles withIndah Cahya Sari Jamil.[19] In June, he and Marthin also won theMalaysia International Series.[20] At theAsian Junior Championships, Carnando took two gold medals. He topped the podium in the boys' doubles with Marthin, and in the mixed doubles with Jamil.[4][21] Carnando and Marthin then won theKazan World Junior Championships beating top seedsDi Zijian andWang Chang.[22] However, he was unable to defend his mixed doubles title with Jamil.[23] In the team event, he also helped the National team finish as runner-up in Asian Junior and win the Suhandinata Cup by defeating China in the mixed team final ofWorld Junior Championships.[24][25]

Entering the senior level, Carnando focused on only playing in the men's doubles.[26] He started the year as semi-finalists at theThailand Open withDaniel Marthin.[27] They later stopped in the quarter-finals at theSwiss Open andSpain Masters.[28][29] They then reached the finals of theHylo Open, but was defeated by World number 1Marcus Fernaldi Gideon andKevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in straight game.[30] Carnanado made his debut with Indonesia team at the2020 Thomas Cup, which is Indonesia won the Thomas Cup after 19 years.[5]

In February 2022, Carnando participated in2022 Badminton Asia Team Championships withIndonesia and lost the title toMalaysia.[31] In March, Marthin and Carnando lost in the quarter-finals in theAll England andSwiss Opens.[32][33] In May, he took part at theSEA Games, and won a gold medal in the men's doubles with Marthin and a bronze medal in the men's team event.[34][35] In July, Carnando and Marthin clinched their first World Tour title at theSingapore Open by beatingFajar Alfian andMuhammad Rian Ardianto in the final.[36]

Carnando began the2023 BWF World Tour at theMalaysia Open, but defeated in the second round to Danish pairKim Astrup andAnders Skaarup Rasmussen.[37] In the following week, he lost in the first round ofIndia Open from their compatriot 8th seedMarcus Fernaldi Gideon andKevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.[38] They then emerged victorious in theIndonesia andThailand Masters,[39][40] entering them to the top 10 of the BWF world rankings.[41]

In March, Carnando competed in the European tour at theAll England Open but lost in the quarter-finals from Chinese pairLiang Weikeng andWang Chang in rubber games.[42] In the next tour, they had to accept first round defeats in two tournaments ofSwiss Open andSpain Masters.[43][44]

In April, Carnando competed at theOrléans Masters in France, but had to lose in the semi-finals from 3rd seed fellow Indonesian pairMuhammad Shohibul Fikri andBagas Maulana.[45] In late April, Carnando competed at theAsian Championships inDubai, United Arab Emirates, but had to lose in the first round from 2nd seed Malaysian pairAaron Chia andSoh Wooi Yik.[46]

In May, Carnando alongside the Indonesian team competed at the2023 Sudirman Cup inSuzhou, China. He played a match in the group stage, lost againstMark Lamsfuß andMarvin Seidel of Germany. Indonesia advanced to the knockout stage but lost at the quarterfinals against China.[47] In late May, Carnando competed in the second Asian tour at theMalaysia Masters, but had to lose in the semi-finals from Malaysian pairMan Wei Chong andTee Kai Wun in straight games.[48] In the following week, they were lost at the first round of theThailand Open from fellow Indonesian pairSabar Karyaman Gutama andMuhammad Reza Pahlevi Isfahani in three games.[49]

In June, Carnando competed at theSingapore Open, but had to lose in the quarter-finals from 3nd seed Malaysian pairAaron Chia andSoh Wooi Yik in three games.[50] In the next tour, they competed at the home tournament,Indonesia Open, but lost in the quarter-finals again from Korean pairKang Min-hyuk andSeo Seung-jae in straight games.[51]

In July, Carnando competed at theKorea Open, but had to lose in the first round from Taiwanese pairLu Ching-yao andYang Po-han in three games.[52] In the next tour, he competed at the2023 Japan Open, but lost in the first round against 3rd seed Indian pairSatwiksairaj Rankireddy andChirag Shetty.[53]

In early August, Carnando competed at theAustralian Open, but had to lose in the second round from fellow Indonesian pairPramudya Kusumawardana andYeremia Rambitan in straight games.[54] In late August, he competed at theWorld Championships, but lost in the third round from 2nd seed Indian pairSatwiksairaj Rankireddy andChirag Shetty in three games.[55] He then reached the finals in theHong Kong, settled for the runner-up toKim Astrup andAnders Skaarup Rasmussen.[56] Carnando made his debut at theAsian Games in Hangzhou,[57] but unable to win any medals in both the men's doubles and team events.[58][59]

The BWF World Tour, which was announced on 19 March 2017 and implemented in 2018,[61] is a series of elite badminton tournaments sanctioned by theBadminton World Federation (BWF). The BWF World Tour is divided into levels of World Tour Finals, Super 1000, Super 750, Super 500, Super 300, and the BWF Tour Super 100.[62]
