Leo C. Zeferetti (July 15, 1927 – March 21, 2018)[1] was aDemocratic member of theUnited States House of Representatives fromNew York.[2] Born inBrooklyn, New York, he attended public schools in the borough. He served in theUnited States Navy from 1944 to 1946 (attaining the rank ofpetty officer second class as ayeoman) and was an officer of theNew York City Department of Correction from 1957 to 1974.[3] During this period, he enrolled atNew York University (1963) andBaruch College (1964-1966) but did not take a degree from either institution.

Zeferetti was a member of the New York State Crime Control Planning Board from 1972 to 1974 and a representative to President's Conference on Correction in 1971. He served as the president of theCorrection Officers' Benevolent Association from 1968 to 1974.[4]

In 1974, he was elected from a district that included thePark Slope,Sunset Park,Bay Ridge,Dyker Heights,Bensonhurst andBath Beach sections of Brooklyn, succeeding longtime incumbentHugh Carey following his ascendancy to thegovernorship of New York. His district was eliminated in redistricting in 1982, and the bulk of its territory was merged with theStaten Island-based district of freshman RepublicanGuy Molinari, who defeated him in the general election that year.
