Leitrim County Council (Irish:Comhairle Chontae Liatroma) is thelocal authority ofCounty Leitrim,Ireland. As acounty council, it is governed by theLocal Government Act 2001. The council is responsible forhousing and community, roads andtransportation,urban planning and development, amenity andculture, andenvironment. The council has 18 elected members. Elections are held every five years and are bysingle transferable vote. The head of the council has the title ofCathaoirleach (chairperson). The county administration is headed by achief executive, Joseph Gilhooly.[1][2] Thecounty town isCarrick-on-Shannon.
Leitrim County Council was established on 1 April 1899 under theLocal Government (Ireland) Act 1898 for theadministrative county ofCounty Leitrim, succeeding the former judicial county of Leitrim.[3][4][5][6]
The county council, which had originally been based in theCarrick-on-Shannon Courthouse,[7] moved toCounty Hall (Irish:Áras an Chontae) in 1994.[8] In 2016, after the results of theBrexit referendum, the council backed a motion in which it was proposed that the Irish government would put pressure on the British government to facilitate a referendum on aunited Ireland within 12 months.[9]
Leitrim County Council has two representatives on theNorthern and Western Regional Assembly where they are part of theBorder Strategic Planning Area Committee.[10][11]
TheLocal Government (Ireland) Act 1919 introduced theelectoral system ofproportional representation by means of thesingle transferable vote (PR-STV) for the1920 Irish local elections.[12][13] This electoral system has been retained, with the 18 members of Leitrim County Council elected for a five-year term of office from multi-memberlocal electoral areas (LEAs).
