Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is anaction-adventure game played from athird-person perspective, alternating between various action-adventure sequences and puzzle-solving scenarios.[1] The game can be played solo, or with another player throughlocal multiplayer.[2]DC Comics presidentJim Lee describedLegacy of the Dark Knight as "a love letter to the world ofBatman",[3] with the game featuring an original story that incorporates different elements from variousBatman-related media,[4] includingfilms, television series, comic books, and othervideo games.[5][6] For example, the character skins are taken fromBatman comics and adaptations, with some of them based on the likeness of the actors who played the characters in live-action, such asMichelle Pfeiffer'sCatwoman andDanny DeVito'sPenguin from the filmBatman Returns (1992),Heath Ledger'sJoker andTom Hardy'sBane fromThe Dark Knight trilogy, andJeffrey Wright'sJim Gordon from the filmThe Batman (2022).[7][8]
Unlike previousLegovideo games, which allowed players to control hundreds of different characters,Legacy of the Dark Knight includes only seven playable characters: Batman, Jim Gordon,Batgirl,Nightwing,Robin,Catwoman, andTalia al Ghul, each possessing unique skills and gadgets.[9][10] For example, Catwoman is able to use a whip as a weapon, while Gordon has a gun that sprays foam.[11] The game is set in anopen-world Lego version ofGotham City, with players tasked with exploring the city and engaging in combat, which has been compared to that of theBatman: Arkham series.[1][12][13] Players can also customize theBatcave to display a variety of vehicles—such as theBatmobile and theBatcycle, among others—andBatsuits, as well as trophies and additional items that can be collected throughout the game.[14]
The game is expected to feature a largeensemble of characters drawn from the history ofBatman comics. The main characters areBatman and his allies,Jim Gordon,Batgirl,Nightwing,Robin,Catwoman, andTalia al Ghul.[9][10] Supervillain members of Batman'srogues gallery include theJoker,Penguin,Poison Ivy,Ra's al Ghul,[14]Bane,[1][12] andCondiment King. The characterBat-Mite is also confirmed to appear, in which he will run a shop where players can buy new suits and items to customize the Batcave.[15]
During the game's reveal atGamescom's Opening Night Live on August 19, 2025,Matt Berry was announced to be voicing Bane, inspired after Hardy's performance fromThe Dark Knight Rises (2012).[1][12] Later that same week,Batman was revealed to be voiced by Shai Matheson, replacingTroy Baker andKevin Conroy from earlier games.[16]
Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is scheduled for release onNintendo Switch 2,PlayStation 5,Windows, andXbox Series X and Series S in 2026.[17]
