Lee Boon Chye (Chinese:李文材;pinyin:Lǐ Wéncái; born 26 September 1959) is aMalaysianpolitician who served as theDeputy Minister of Health in thePakatan Harapan (PH) administration under former Prime MinisterMahathir Mohamad and former MinisterDzulkefly Ahmad from July 2018 to the collapse of the PH administration in February 2020 and theMember of Parliament (MP) forGopeng from March 2008 to November 2022.[1] He is a member of thePeople's Justice Party (PKR), a component party of thePH coalition.[2][3][4]

Background

Lee is a doctor and a certifiedCardiologist. He graduated from medical school in 1985 from theUniversity of Malaya. He also holds 2 post graduate degrees, a Master's of Medicine from theNational University of Malaysia (UKM) andMembership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom.[5]

Politics career

After losing in his debut in the2004 general election (GE11), Lee was elected to Parliament in the2008 general election (GE12),[6] defeating Ling Hee Leong, son of formerMalaysian Chinese Association (MCA) president,Ling Liong Sik to wrest the Gopeng seat away from the then governingBarisan Nasional (BN) coalition.[7] He successfully retained the seat the subsequent2013 (GE13) and2018 (GE14) general elections.

After the GE14 which saw PH forming the new federal government, Lee had initially turned down the new seventh Prime MinisterMahathir Mohamad's offer to appoint him Deputy Health Minister.[8] He however relented and accepted the post at last after much persuasions and considerations.[9]
