Lee Jason Barron[1] (born 15 May 1970[2]) is a British politician andtrade unionist and who has been theMember of Parliament (MP) forCorby and East Northamptonshire since2024.[3]

Early life and career

Lee was raised in a working-class family inFar Cotton,Northampton, and went to Delapre Primary School.[4]

Lee left school at 16 to take up an apprenticeship atRoyal Mail as apostal worker.[4] He later became theCommunication Workers Union’s (CWU)Midlands Regional Secretary.[5]

After Lee’s time working for the CWU, he became theMidlands Regional Secretary for theTrade Union Congress (TUC) representing over 1 million workers.[4][5]

Lee has also been aNorthamptonmagistrate for over 20 years.[4][6]

Political career

Barron is a formerNorthamptonborough councillor and during this time was leader of the localLabour group.[4]

In 2012, Barron was selected as theLabour candidate for theNorthamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner election, but stood down after he was caught out by a rule change that made him and many other candidates ineligible.[4][6]

On 4 July 2024, Barron was elected asMP forCorby and East Northamptonshire, turning the incumbentConservativeTom Pursglove’s 10,268[7] majority into his own 6,331 majority.[8][9][10]

On 11 September 2024, Barron was elected as Chair of theAll-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Modernising Employment.[11]

In November 2024, Barron voted in favour of theTerminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which proposes to legaliseassisted suicide.[12]

Personal life

In aBBC radio debate before his election, Barron said he had always been a “Mod never a Rocker” and rides a "Vespa with 12 mirrors, eight spotlamps and continental whitewall tyres".[13]
