Leandro Daniel Cabrera Sasía (born 17 June 1991) is a Uruguayan professionalfootballer who plays forLa Liga clubEspanyol. Mainly acentral defender, he can also play as aleft-back.
He spent the vast majority of his career in Spain, making 299 appearances in theSegunda División and more than 200 inLa Liga.[3] Other than in his own country, he also competed professionally in Italy.
Born inMontevideo, Cabrera started his career with localDefensor Sporting, playing sevenPrimera División matches for the first team as they won the 2009Clausura. In June 2009, he signed withLa Liga clubAtlético Madrid for€1.5 million, paid to formerUruguay international playerDaniel Fonseca who owned his rights (and ceded 50% to Atlético).[4]
In a strangefirst season, where he even failed to appear forthe reserves,[5] Cabrera's debut for the first team only took place on 2 May 2010, featuring as aleft-back in a 3–1 away defeat againstSevilla FC. He was alsobooked in the game.[6][7]
In the summer of 2010, Cabrera was loaned toRecreativo de Huelva for2010–11, with theAndalusians in theSegunda División.[8] He joined another second-tier side,CD Numancia, on loan for thenext campaign.[9] The following five years – the first two on loan – he continued competing at that level withHércules CF,[10]Real Madrid Castilla[11] andReal Zaragoza.[12]
On 15 July 2017,free agent Cabrera joinedFC Crotone on a three-year deal.[13] His debut in theSerie A took place on 20 August, when he featured the full 90 minutes in the 3–0 home loss toAC Milan.[14]
Cabrera returned to theSpanish top flight on 15 January 2018, being loaned toGetafe CF.[15] The move was made permanent on 7 July,[16] and he rarely missed a match during his spell at theColiseum Alfonso Pérez.[17]
On 20 January 2020, Cabrera signed a four-and-a-half-year contract withRCD Espanyol after his €9 millionrelease clause was paid.[18] In March, he tested positive forCOVID-19.[19]
Following the departure ofDavid López in the 2022 off-season, Cabrera was namedcaptain[20] while also agreeing to an extension until 2026.[21] On 28 August, as his team had no moresubstitutions left (a reserve goalkeeper was on the bench, however), he played a couple of minutes in goal afterBenjamin Lecomte wassent off already in injury time, conceding one goal fromKarim Benzema in an eventual 3–1 home defeat toReal Madrid.[22]
Cabrera representedUruguay in two editions of theFIFA U-20 World Cup,[23] reaching the round of 16 in2009.[24] On 7 January 2022, aged already 30, he was called bythe full side for the first time, for2022 FIFA World Cupqualifiers againstParaguay andVenezuela.[25] In October, he was named in a 55-man preliminary squad for the finals in Qatar.[26]
