Laurence Alfred Mound (born 1934 inWillesden, London)[1] is anentomologist,[2][3] who works mostly on the biology and systematics ofThysanoptera (thrips),[3] an area in which he is considered a world authority.[1]
His zoological author abbreviation isMound.[4]
He gained a B.Sc in zoology at theUniversity of London in 1957,[1][3] a diploma in Economic Entomology in 1958 fromImperial College, London,[1] a diploma of Tropical Agriculture fromI.C.T.A. Trinidad in 1959,[1] and in 1975 was awarded a D.Sc from theUniversity of London.[3]
From 1959-1961 he served inIbadan as entomologist to theNigerian Department of Agricultural Research, working onwhitefly vectors ofcrop virus diseases. InSudan (1961-1964), he continued this work on whiteflies as entomologist to the Empire Cotton Growing Corporation. In 1964 he was appointed to theBritish Museum of Natural History, where he was responsible for the collections of whitefly and thrips and their research. He became head of thehemiptera section of BMNH in 1969, and deputy keeper of the entomology department in 1975, and head keeper in 1981.[1] In 1994 he moved toAustralia[1] where he continues to work on Thysanoptera.[3]
Mound was appointedOfficer of the Order of Australia in the2025 Australia Day Honours.[5]
He has described over 640 thrips species and some 90 thrips genera.[2]
