Laura Bailey (born May 28, 1981) is an American voice actress. She made her debut asKid Trunks in theFunimation dub ofDragon Ball Z and has since voiced Henrietta inGunslinger Girl,Emily / Glitter Lucky inGlitter Force,Tohru Honda inFruits Basket, Lust inFullmetal Alchemist andFullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, the title character in the Funimation dub ofShin-Chan, and Maka Albarn inSoul Eater. Early life

Bailey was born inMississippi[1] on May 28, 1981.[2][3] She is of partialFilipino descent,[4] and has an older sister named Jenny.[1] Her father was in theAir Force, causing the family to move frequently; before she was six years old, they had lived inOklahoma andTexas, specificallySan Antonio and all aroundNorth Texas.[1] They eventually settled inAllen, Texas.[1] She had a passing interest in acting and performed in school plays, but was planning to become a biologist.[1] She did not realize she could make a career out of acting until she watched aDawson's Creekbehind-the-scenes special in whichKatie Holmes was interviewed.[1][5][6] She attended the theatre program atCollin County Community College inPlano, Texas,[5] where she participated in productions of the playsSuburbia,Through a Glass Onion, andDon't Rock the Jukebox.[7]

Voice actorKent Williams spotted Bailey at one of her college plays and invited her to audition forFunimation while they were working onDragon Ball Z.[8] Her first major role onDragon Ball Z wasKid Trunks,[8] which she portrayed with a raspy voice.[9] Bailey initially tried to do the role alongside her college career, but stopped attending on the advice of her lecturer to focus on voice acting.[10] She voiced the starring characterMarlene Angel inBlue Gender, which was the first project Funimation did outside of theDragon Ball world,[6] andKeiko Yukimura inYu Yu Hakusho, which ran on Cartoon Network.

Bailey was cast for the starring role ofTohru Honda in the animeFruits Basket. She said that Tohru's character has helped her be more positive: "I was so inspired by her character by her, joy, and outlook on life that, you know, you wanna emulate that."[8] She later voicedLust, one of the villains inFullmetal Alchemist, andSana Kurata inKodocha.[11]

Bailey had been working with Funimation for about four years before she startedADR directing. She worked onBlue Gender: The Warrior and some episodes ofCase Closed. Her first major ADR directing project wasGunslinger Girl, in which she also voices Henrietta. She also co-directed parts ofKodocha.[11] She became a line producer for the Funimation dub ofShin-Chan and also voiced the title character.

In 2020, Bailey starred asAbby Anderson in the video gameThe Last of Us Part II, a role which won her theBAFTA Video Games Award for Best Performer in a Leading Role and the Best Performance award atThe Game Awards 2020, despite receivingdeath threats in response to the game's divisive character choices and plot twists.[15][16] In 2022, Bailey was nominated for Best VA Performance (EN) at theCrunchyroll Anime Awards.[17]

In 2001, Bailey played a minor role in an episode ofWalker, Texas Ranger (titled "Saturday Night") as the daughter of a club owner (Frank Stallone Jr.) with ties to theMafia. She later had a brief appearance in an episode ofOne Tree Hill ("It gets worse at night"), which was filmed in Texas. She has appeared in the filmsMr. Brooks,Ruffian, andThe Staircase Murders.

Bailey is also a cast member of the popularDungeons & Dragons web seriesCritical Role, where she played Vex'ahlia ("Vex") inCampaign One, Jester Lavorre inCampaign Two, Imogen Temult inCampaign Three and Thimble inCampaign Four.[18][19]Critical Role was both the Webby Winner and the People's Voice Winner in the "Games (Video Series & Channels)" category at the 2019Webby Awards;[20] the show was also both a Finalist and the Audience Honor Winner at the 2019Shorty Awards.[21] After becoming hugely successful, theCritical Role cast left theGeek & Sundry network in early 2018 and set up their own production company,Critical Role Productions.[22][23][24][25] Soon after, they aimed to raise $750,000 onKickstarter to create an animated series of their first campaign, but ended up raising over $11 million.[26][18] In November 2019,Amazon Prime Video announced that they had acquired the streaming rights to this animated series, now titledThe Legend of Vox Machina;[27] Bailey reprises her role as Vex.[28] Bailey is also one of the narrators for theaudiobook edition of the novelCritical Role: Vox Machina – Kith & Kin (2021).[29][30]

Bailey made an appearance in the season finale of HBO's live-action adaptation ofThe Last of Us in a cameo role as a Firefly nurse, a character she voiced in the original game.[31]

Bailey and fellow voice actressColleen Clinkenbeard were roommates while working together atFunimation in the late 1990s and early 2000s.[32]

Bailey and voice actorTravis Willingham briefly dated when they were in college.[1] They reconnected years later and were married inCamarillo, California, on September 25, 2011.[33][34][35][36] They reside inLos Angeles[9][37] with their son (born June 28, 2018).[38][36]
