Latite is anigneous, volcanic rock, withaphanitic-aphyric to aphyric-porphyritic texture. It is the volcanic equivalent ofmonzonite. Itsmineral assemblage is usually alkalifeldspar andplagioclase in approximately equal amounts.Quartz is less than five percent and is absent in afeldspathoid-bearing latite, andolivine is absent in aquartz-bearing latite. When quartz content is greater than five percent the rock is classified asquartz latite.[1]Biotite,hornblende,pyroxene and scarceolivine orquartz are common accessory minerals. Feldspathoid-bearing latite is sometimes referred to astristanite.[2]
Rhomb porphyries are an unusual variety with gray-whiteporphyriticrhomb shapedphenocrysts embedded in a very fine grained red-brownmatrix. The composition of rhomb porphyry places it in thetrachyte - latite classification of theQAPF diagram.
Latite is found, for example, as lavas in Bulgaria[3] and asintrusivelaccoliths andsills inSouth Dakota, USA.[4]
