TheLatin Quarter of Paris (French:Quartier latin,IPA:[kaʁtjelatɛ̃]) is anurban university campus in the5th and the6th arrondissements of Paris. It is situated on theleft bank of theSeine, around theSorbonne.

Known for its student life, lively atmosphere, andbistros, the Latin Quarter is one of the oldest parts of the universities of Paris. It continues to be the heart of the universities andGrandes écoles that succeeded theUniversity of Paris, such as:

OtherGrandes écoles such as theÉcole polytechnique have relocated in recent times to more spacious settings, notably inParis-Saclay.

The area gets its name from theLatin language, which was widely spoken in and around the University during theMiddle Ages, after the twelfth century philosopherPierre Abélard and his students took up residence there.[1]

Additionally, the Latin Quarter has the honor of being the setting of Puccini's tragic opera,La Bohème.

The Latin Quarter is home to many academic institutions, includingSorbonne University and thePanthéon-Sorbonne University in theSorbonne historical building. It is also home to the largest university libraries in Paris, such as theSainte-Geneviève Library, theSorbonne Library, theSainte-Barbe Library, the Assas Law Library and theCujas Law Library. University administrative buildings are also located there, such as the presidency of Sorbonne University in theCordeliers Convent or the headquarters of Paris Cité University in the formerÉcole de Médecine.
