Lake Saroma (サロマ湖,Saroma-ko), alsoSaroma Lagoon,[1] is acoastal lagoon (hence a body ofbrackish water) inSaroma,Kitami, andYūbetsu. It is located inAbashiri Quasi-National Park. By area, the lake is thethird largest in Japan and the largest in Hokkaidō.
The name comes from theAinu place nameSaruomahetsu, meaning "place of manyMiscanthus reeds and rushes".[2]
Another nearby coastal lagoon isNotoro Lagoon, about 15 km (9.3 mi) to the east.
To the NW ofLake Abashiri lie theNotoro Lagoon (32 km in circumference and 58 sq km in area) and the Saroma Lagoon (72 km in circumference and 149 sq km in area).
