Ladislao Mazurkiewicz Iglesias[2] (Latin American Spanish:[laðisˈlaomasuɾˈkjeβitʃ]; 14 February 1945 – 2 January 2013) was a Uruguayanfootballer who played as agoalkeeper.[3]
Ladislao Mazurkiewicz Iglesias was born on 14 February 1945 inPiriápolis and was raised in theReducto neighbourhood ofMontevideo.[4] He was the fourth son and fifth child of Terenty Mazurkiewicz, a Polish-born man fromWarsaw, and Josefa Iglesias Tubío, a native ofBrión,Spain.[5][6] His fatheremigrated to Uruguay shortly before the outbreak ofWorld War II and eventually settled in the town ofCardal, in theFlorida Department, where he worked as a rural laborer and met and married Iglesias, who hademigrated to Uruguay in the 1920s.[7]
Mazurkiewicz helped theUruguay national team qualify for the semifinals of the1970 World Cup, where thecharrúas were stopped by the eventual champion,Brazil. He was elected the best goalkeeper of that tournament. He also played for the Brazilian sideAtlético Mineiro.
During his international career (1965–74), he earned a total of 37 appearances with the national team of his native Uruguay.[8] He coachedPeñarol from 1988–89.[9]
Mazurkiewicz died on 2 January 2013 inMontevideo, Uruguay, aged 67, from undisclosed causes. He is buried atParque del Recuerdo cemetery.[10]
