László Kleinheisler (Hungarian:[ˈlaːsloːˈklɛinhɛiʃlɛr];[2] born 8 April 1994) is a Hungarian professionalfootballer who plays as amidfielder theHungary national team.
Having joined Hungarian clubVideoton FC in 2013, he made his debut in theHungarian first division on 28 July 2013 againstHaladás, while also scoring his first league goal in an eventual 2–0 home win.
On 28 July 2013, he scored his first goal in the2013–2014 season againstSzombathelyi Haladás at theSóstói Stadion,Székesfehérvár. The match ended with a 2–0 victory forVideoton FC.[3] In the rest of the season he scored another three goals, one againstÚjpest FC at theSóstói Stadion on 6 October 2013,[4] one againstMezőkövesd-Zsóry SE in a 1–0 victory at the Sóstói Stadion on 8 November 2013,[5] and the last goal againstDiósgyőri VTK at theDVTK Stadion in a 2–2 draw match on 24 November 2013.[6]
In the2014–2015 season, he played only 370 minutes in 11 appearances forVideoton FC and 911 minutes in 12 appearances forPuskás Akadémia FC.[7] In July 2015, Kleinheisler refused to sign the extension of his contract with Videoton, therefore he was ousted to the reserves for the2015–2016 season.[8] Videoton refused to sell him to theEkstraklasa clubŚląsk Wrocław in August.[9][10]
On 20 January 2016, Kleinheisler joinedWerder Bremen on a 3.5-year contract for an undisclosed fee.[11][12] He made his debut in theBundesliga on 30 January 2016 againstHertha BSC in theWeserstadion. He was brought onto the pitch in the 62nd minute at 2–0 to Berlin and helped Bremen come back from 2–0 and 3–1 deficits to earn a 3–3 draw.[13]
On 13 August 2016, Kleinheisler joined German clubDarmstadt 98 for a season-long loan deal.[14] On 22 October 2016, he scored his first goal in the Bundesliga on the 8th match day of the2016–17 Bundesliga in a 3–1 victory overWolfsburg.[15] He was selected for the team of week 8 of the 2016–17 Bundesliga season after this goal.[16]
On 20 January 2017, Kleinheisler's loan at Darmstadt was cut short and he joinedFerencváros on loan for the second half of the season.[17]
On 20 June 2017, Kleinheisler joinedFC Astana on a year-long loan deal.[18]
On 16 January 2019,Osijek announced that Kleinheisler had cancelled his contract withAstana, and had signed a 3.5-year contract with NK Osijek.[19]
In January 2023 he signed forPanathinaikos.[20] On 5 February 2023, he scored his first goal for the club in a 2–0 win overLamia.
On 2 January 2024, he was signed byHNK Hajduk Split.[21][22]
On 4 February 2025, Kleinheisler signed withGrazer AK inAustrian Football Bundesliga.[23]
On 6 November 2015,Bernd Storck announced theHungarian national team squad for theUEFA Euro 2016 qualifying play-off match againstNorway. The biggest surprise was the inclusion of Kleinheisler because he had not played a single match in the2015–16 Nemzeti Bajnokság I season.[24] Six days later, he scored on his debut againstNorway at theUllevaal Stadion inOslo,Norway in the first leg of theUEFA Euro 2016 qualifying play-offs.[25] He was selected for Hungary'sEuro 2016 squad.[26] He played the full 90 minutes in each of Hungary's first two matches in thegroup phase. In the first match, a 2–0 win againstAustria, he assistedÁdám Szalai for the first goal and was voted "Man of the Match".[27][28] Having received a yellow card in the second match againstIceland and with Hungary already qualified for the round of sixteen, Kleinheisler was rested in the third match.[29] On 1 June 2021, Kleinheisler was included in the final 26-man squad to represent Hungary at the rescheduledUEFA Euro 2020 tournament.[30] He started all three matches as Hungary finished bottom ofGroup F.[31][32] On 14 May 2024, Kleinheisler was named in Hungary's squad forUEFA Euro 2024.[33] He appeared as a substitute forÁdám Nagy in both the team's opening match againstSwitzerland[34] and their second match againstGermany.[35]
His nickname is "Scholes", afterPaul Scholes, because they are both red-haired and short-sized.[36]
