Kyra Minturn Sedgwick (/ˈkɪərəˈsɛwɪk/KEERSEJ-wik; born August 19, 1965) is an American film and television actress. She is best known for her starring role as Deputy ChiefBrenda Leigh Johnson on the crime dramaThe Closer (2005–2012), for which she won aGolden Globe in 2007 and anEmmy Award in 2010. She also starred in the 1992 TV filmMiss Rose White, which won an Emmy Award. She was nominated for aGolden Globe Award for her performance in the 1995 filmSomething to Talk About. Sedgwick's other film credits includeOliver Stone'sBorn on the Fourth of July (1989) andCameron Crowe'sSingles (1992). She also had a recurring role as Madeline Wuntch on the sitcomBrooklyn Nine-Nine.

Early life

Sedgwick was born in New York City on August 19, 1965,[3] the daughter of Patricia (née Rosenwald), a speech teacher and educational/family therapist, andHenry Dwight Sedgwick V, a venture capitalist.[1][4] Her mother was Jewish and her father was Episcopalian and of English heritage.[5][6] Sedgwick has identified as Jewish[6][7] and has stated that she participates in Passover seders.[8]

She is a descendant ofWilliam Ellery, a signatory of theDeclaration of Independence, andEllery Sedgwick, an editor ofThe Atlantic Monthly. She is the sister of actorRobert Sedgwick, the half-sister of jazz guitaristMike Stern, thefirst cousin once removed of actressEdie Sedgwick, and the niece of writerJohn Sedgwick.[9] She is the aunt of R&B singerGeorge Nozuka,[10][11] actorPhilip Nozuka,[9] and singer/songwriterJustin Nozuka[12][13] (their mother, Holly, is Sedgwick's half-sister).[14]

Sedgwick's parents separated when she was four and divorced when she was six.[1][15]

Sedgwick graduated fromFriends Seminary and attended Sarah Lawrence College[1] before transferring to the University of Southern California, where she graduated with a theater degree.[16]

Sedgwick obtained her first acting job in 1982 on the television soap operaAnother World, portraying Julia Shearer,[17] troubled granddaughter of Liz Matthews.[18] In 1988, she appeared in a TV version ofLanford Wilson'sLemon Sky.[19] In 1989, Sedgwick played the role of Donna[20] in the Oscar-winningBorn on the Fourth of July.[21]

Sedgwick played the title role[22] in theEmmy Award–winning[23] 1992 TV filmMiss Rose White as a Jewish immigrant who comes to terms with her ethnicity.[24][25][26] During the 1990s, she appeared in several Hollywood movies, includingSingles (1992),Heart and Souls (1993),Something to Talk About (1995; for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress—Motion Picture[27]),Phenomenon (1996; in which she played the love interest ofJohn Travolta's character[28]), andCritical Care (1997).

Sedgwick has starred alongside her husbandKevin Bacon inPyrates (1991)[29] andThe Woodsman (2004).[30] Other film credits includeSecondhand Lions (2003),The Game Plan (2007),The Possession (2012), andThe Edge of Seventeen (2016).

Sedgwick is best known for starring asBrenda Leigh Johnson in the television seriesThe Closer.[31][32] She played this role from 2005 to 2012.[33] In 2007, she began earning approximately $300,000 per episode onThe Closer.[34] For portraying Brenda, Sedgwick earned six consecutive nominations forGolden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama (winning once),[35] five consecutive nominations for thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series (winning once),[36][37] and seven nominations forScreen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series.[38]The Closer aired its final episode on August 13, 2012,[39] following the completion of its seventh season; the series's broadcasterTNT stated that the decision to end the series was made by Sedgwick.[40] The first episode ofMajor Crimes—a sequel series that did not feature Sedgwick, but included many other cast members fromThe Closer—aired immediately following the final episode ofThe Closer.[41]

Sedgwick produced the television seriesProof for TNT. The show debuted in 2015 and aired for one season.[42]

In 2017, Sedgwick directedStory of a Girl, a television film based on the2007 novel of the same name bySara Zarr. The film marked Sedgwick's directorial debut.[43] It starred Sedgwick's husbandKevin Bacon; her daughterSosie Bacon; and others.[44]Story of a Girl aired on the Lifetime network.[45][43]

Sedgwick portrayed the character of Madeline Wuntch in the comedy seriesBrooklyn Nine-Nine.[46] She also played the lead role of Jean Raines in the comedy pilotMy Village, written byKari Lizer.[47]My Village was approved by ABC and re-titledCall Your Mother on May 21, 2020, for the 2020–2021 television season.[48]

In 2023, Sedgwick played the role of Aunt Julia in season 2 of the drama seriesThe Summer I Turned Pretty.[49]

Personal life

Sedgwick andKevin Bacon were married on September 4, 1988,[1] about 18 months after meeting on the set of PBS's adaptation ofLanford Wilson'sLemon Sky.[50] They have two children, Travis Sedgwick Bacon and actressSosie Bacon.[2] The family splits their time between New York City and the family farm in Connecticut.[51][52]
