Kvaisi orKvaisa (Georgian:კვაისი[kʼʷaisi],Ossetian:Къуайса[ˈkʼʷäjsä]) is anurban-type settlement in theOni Municipality of Georgia. According to the official subdivision ofGeorgia it is in theOni district of theRacha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region of Georgia.
Settlement is located on the riverJejora (which is a tributary ofRioni river) on the slopes ifRacha mountain ridge, 60 km north-west ofTskhinvali and 20 km from Oni.
Lead andzinc deposits are located near the city and in the Soviet times an ore mining and processing enterprise andhydroelectric power station worked in the region.
The town suffered significantly in the 7–8 September 2009earthquake and around 80 local families remained homeless in late September.[2]
