Kurtis MacDermid (born March 25, 1994) is a Canadian professionalice hockeydefenceman for theNew Jersey Devils of theNational Hockey League (NHL). MacDermid won theStanley Cup with theColorado Avalanche in2022. He is mostly known as anenforcer.
MacDermid first played junior hockey with theOwen Sound Greys in theGreater Ontario Junior Hockey League. He was selected in the 2010 OHL Priority Draft, 139th overall by theOwen Sound Attack. He later made his debut in theOntario Hockey League with the Attack in the2011–12 season before signing as an undrafted free agent to a three-year, entry-level contract with theLos Angeles Kings on September 13, 2012.[1]
He concluded his junior career with theErie Otters in the2014–15 season, before beginning his professional career within the Kings organization, assigned to AHL affiliate, theOntario Reign, to begin the2015–16 season.
After two seasons as a regular on the blue line with the Reign and having made positive progress at the conclusion of his rookie contract, MacDermid was re-signed to a one-year, two-way contract extension on July 14, 2017.[2] After competing in training camp and pre-season, MacDermid made the opening night roster with the Kings for the2017–18 season. He made his NHL debut with Los Angeles on opening night in a 2-0 victory over thePhiladelphia Flyers on October 5, 2017.[3] He scored his first NHL goal in a 4-0 win over theMontreal Canadiens on October 26, 2017.[4][5] MacDermid was sent down to the AHL on January 16, 2018. On January 3, 2020 MacDermid was suspended for 2 games for an illegal check.
On July 21, 2021, MacDermid was selected from the Kings at the2021 NHL Expansion Draft by theSeattle Kraken.[6] On July 27, 2021, the Kraken then traded him to theColorado Avalanche in exchange for a fourth round pick in 2023.[7] MacDermid signed a two-year contract extension with the Avalanche on April 5, 2022.[8] MacDermid did not appear for the Avalanche during the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs as they won the Stanley Cup for the third time in franchise history.
In his third year with the Avalanche during the2023–24 season, on March 1, 2024, MacDermid was traded by Colorado to theNew Jersey Devils in exchange for signing rights toZakhar Bardakov and a2024 seventh-round pick.[9]
As a pending free agent, MacDermid opted to remain with the Devils, re-signing to a three-year, $3.45 million contract extension on May 17, 2024.[10]
MacDermid is the son of former NHL playerPaul MacDermid and was born inQuebec City during his father's stint with theQuebec Nordiques, but was raised inSauble Beach, Ontario.[11] His older brother,Lane, also played in the NHL with theBoston Bruins,Dallas Stars andCalgary Flames.[12]
