Kurt Huber (born 4 May 1937) is a Swiss tenor for concert andLieder.
Born inZürich, Kurt Huber studiedvoice inVienna withAnton Dermota.[1]
He performed solo parts in works ofJohann Sebastian Bach, especially theEvangelist in hispassions andoratorios. On 19 March 1967 he performed the Evangelist in theSt Matthew Passion in theTonhalle Zürich with the Zuercher Bach Chor.[2] He sang in theKonstantinbasilika with the Trierer Bachchor, in 1971 in theChristmas Oratorio, along withJulia Hamari, in 1973 in theSt. John Passion, withWolfgang Schöne, and in 1980 in theSt. Matthew Passion, withHildegard Laurich.[3] He sang theSt John Passion inUlm with the choir Ulmer Kantorei on 4 May 1985.[4]
Kurt Huber frequently performed the tenor part in the recordings ofBach cantatas with the Heinrich-Schütz-Chor Heilbronn, thePforzheim Chamber Orchestra andFritz Werner, also the Evangelist of Bach'sAscension Oratorio.[5] A reviewer described his performance:
He sings with excellent, plangent tone and is wonderfully fluent in the very difficult chromatics of his aria ... Much though I admireHelmut Krebs I think that Huber actually makes a more ingratiating sound. He seems, dare I say it, more polished than his distinguished colleague and his voice is certainly more even.[6]
Kurt Huber has appeared in Handel's oratoriosMessiah,Judas Maccabaeus,Israel in Egypt,Samson,Saul andJoshua. He sang in Haydn'sThe Creation andThe Seasons, in Mozart's masses andRequiem, Beethoven's9th Symphony andMissa solemnis. Oratorios from the period ofRomanticism have included Liszt'sChristus and Mendelssohn'sElijah andPaulus. He has performed in Bruckner's masses, Dvořák'sRequiem andStabat Mater, Verdi'sRequiem and works byGustav Mahler andFranz Schmidt.[1]
In 1963 Kurt Huber participated in the Swiss premiere of Mozart'sApollo und Hyacinth.[7] With the Heinrich-Schütz-ChorHeilbronn he sang in concert Bach'sHohe Messe in h-moll with Herrad Wehrung,Claudia Hellmann,Jakob Stämpfli,Maurice André (trumpet),Hermann Baumann (horn), theWürttembergisches Kammerorchester Heilbronn, conducted by Fritz Werner in 1967, in Mendelssohn'sElias withSiegmund Nimsgern in the title role in 1968, and in Handel'sMessias with theWürttembergisches Kammerorchester Heilbronn in 1985, also in the StadtkircheBad Wimpfen.[8] With the choir Philharmonischer ChorSchwäbisch Gmünd he performed Haydn'sDie Schöpfung (The Creation) in 1971 withUrsula Buckel andRoland Hermann,Bruckner'sMass No. 3 andTe Deum withKari Løvaas,Hildegard Rütgers andGünter Reich, and Verdi'sMessa da Requiem in 1987, also in the Münster of theZwiefalten Abbey.[9] In 1982 he performed the tenor part of Puccini'sMessa di Gloria.[10]
Kurt Huber has been a teacher at theMusikhochschule Zürich.
Huber's recordings besides Bach have included rare repertoire such as Carissimi's oratorioJephte, aMagnificat ofClaudio Monteverdi and aMagnificat ofHeinrich Schütz, all with theSpandauer Kantorei andHelmuth Rilling, German Lieder byLudwig Senfl, and the oratorioDas Gesicht Jesajas (The Vision ofIsaiah) op. 41 ofWilly Burkhard, withAdele Stolte,Jakob Stämpfli and the Berner Symphonieorchester conducted byMartin Flämig.
