It originates from the island ofMindanao and is a staple food among theMaranao people ofLanao del Sur. It is related to theIndonesiannasi kuning of neighboringSulawesi, but it does not usecoconut milk. The dish is characteristically yellow because of the use of turmeric (kalawag inMaranao, andkunig orluyang dilaw in most otherPhilippine languages).[1][2][3][4]
