TheKruostas is a river ofKėdainiai district municipality,Kaunas County, centralLithuania. It flows for 28.9 kilometres (18.0 mi) and has a basin area of 99.7 km2 (38.5 sq mi). It originates nearAlksnėnai village and goes through agriculture fields passing the villages ofŽilvičiai,Šlapaberžė,Beržai andDaškoniai. The lower course goes through a deep valley beside Vaidatoniai hillfort. This area isKruostas botanic sanctuary. The river meets theNevėžis from the right side nearUrbeliai village.Vaidatoniai pond is on the Kruostas river.[2]
The nameKruostas derives fromLithuanian wordkruostas orskruostas ('cheek,eyelash,eyebrow'), further fromskrosti, skersti ('to slice, to butcher').[3]
