Koshovicë (Albaniandefinite form:Koshovica;Greek:Κοσοβίτσα/Κοσσοβίτσα;romanized:Kosovítsa/Kossovítsa) is a village inGjirokastër County, southernAlbania.[1] At the 2015 local government reform it became part of the municipality ofDropull.[2]

St. Mary's Monastery Church, located within the village, is aReligious Cultural Monument of Albania.[3]

Name

The placename Koshovicë has several possible origins. TheSlavic word кос,kos for the common blackbird and the suffix form ов-иц-а,ov-its-a with a sound change ofs intosh through OldAlbanian.[4] Other derivations are from theBulgarian word кош,kosh for 'basket' with the suffix form -ob+-иц-а,-ov+its-a giving a meaning of 'woven', or the toponym is formed from a personal name Кошо,Kosho.[4]

Demographics

According toOttoman statistics, the village had 188 inhabitants in 1895.[5] The village is inhabited byGreeks and the population was 864 in 1992.[6]
