Kouniakary orKoniakari is a town andurban commune in theCercle of Kayes in theKayes Region of south-westernMali. The town is located approximately 65 kilometres fromKayes city. In 2009 the commune had a population of 8135.
In 1855, El HadjUmar Tall constructed atata (fortification) at Koniakari to protect against the soldiers ofFrench ColonelLouis Archinard; thetata still stands today, and has become a tourist attraction.
