Kim Frederick Coates (born February 21, 1958)[1] is a Canadian-American actor who has worked in both Canadian and American films and television series. He has worked onBroadway portrayingStanley Kowalski inA Streetcar Named Desire and in the lead role ofMacbeth performed at theStratford Festival. He is best known for his role asAlexander "Tig" Trager in theFX seriesSons of Anarchy and as Declan Gardiner in theCitytv seriesBad Blood, as well as his recurring roles inPrison Break,Cold Case,CSI andCSI: Miami. He has also had film roles inThe Last Boy Scout (1991),Bad Boys (1995),Black Hawk Down (2001),King of Sorrow (2007), the reinterpretation ofAssault on Precinct 13 (2005), andGoon (2011).

Early life and career

Coates was born inSaskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Frederick and Joyce Coates.[2] He first saw a play while attending theUniversity of Saskatchewan, where he enrolled in a drama course as an elective.[3] This experience inspired him to pursue an acting career. Coates portrayed Stanley Kowalski inA Streetcar Named Desire and was the youngest ever to play the title role ofMacbeth at theStratford Festival in his native Canada. Coates made his screen debut in the filmThe Boy in Blue (1986). This role opened up opportunities for him, and he has appeared in over 100 titles to date.[4]

In 2018 he had his first stage role in almost thirty years, playing Johnny "Rooster" Byron in the Outside the March production ofJez Butterworth's playJerusalem.[5] He won theDora Mavor Moore Award forOutstanding Performance by a Male in a Principal Role – Play at the 2018 Dora Awards.[6]

At the7th Canadian Screen Awards, Coates won the award forBest Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role for his performance as gangster Declan Gardiner in the television seriesBad Blood.[7]

Philanthropy

Coates supports the One Heart Source, a non profit organization aiming at ending poverty by designing high quality global initiatives focused on education and health.[8]

Coates participates in Rally for Kids events in support for The Pinball Clemons Foundation.[9][10]

Personal life

Coates has both Canadian and American citizenship.[11] He lives in Los Angeles, California with his wife, Diana Chappell, and two children, Kyla and Brenna.[12][13] He is known to be good friends withPrison Break co-starWilliam Fichtner, as well asKevin Costner andSons of Anarchy co-starTheo Rossi. Coates became a United States citizen in 2010.[14]

On June 6, 2017, Coates received an honorarydoctorate at the University of Saskatchewan.[15] He received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal (Saskatchewan) on March 28, 2023.[16]
