Kim Bảng [kim˧˧:ɓa̰ːŋ˧˩˧] is adistrict-level town ofHà Nam province in theRed River Delta region ofVietnam.
According to four documents ofCựu Đường thư,An Nam chí lược,An Nam chí nguyên andĐại Việt sử ký toàn thư, on the right bank of theĐáy river there was ever anadministrative unit called asCổ Bảng rural district[note 2] (古榜縣, Cổ Bảng huyện), belonging toLị Nhân canton (利仁州, Lị Nhân châu).
Under theState of Vietnam regime, Kim Bảng was continued to change its name asKim Bảng district (quận Kim Bảng), belonging toHà Nam province (tỉnh Hà Nam).
On November 8, 2024, theMinistry of Construction issued Decision 1036/QĐ-BXD on "recognition of areas where were expected to establish wards under Kim Bảng municipality,Hà Nam province, meeting the developed standard of the urban infrastructure which was applied to wards of the IV-class urban area".[note 3] Accordingly, theVietnamese government's all levels have basically agreed to prepare for the recognition of the urban regime for the entire area of Kim Bảng rural district.
On November 14, 2024, theNational Assembly Standing Committee issued Resolution 1288/NQ-UBTVQH[1] on arranging the district and commune-leveladministrative units ofHà Nam province in the period of 2023–25, which takes effect from January 1, 2025. Accordingly, officially establishing Kim Bảng town (thị xã Kim Bảng) ofHà Nam province on the basis of the entire Kim Bảng rural district.
Since the evening of February 8, 2025,[2] the area of Kim Bảng town has been automatically divided into 17commune-leveladministrative units.
According to the 2023 statistical yearbook of the wholeHà Nam province, Kim Bảng town covers an area of 175.40 km2. ByĐồng Khánh địa dư chí lược, Kim Bảng seated on two large rivers Đáy andNhuệ, so it was almost very sunken, which is disadvantage ofagricultural situation in therainy season.[3][4][5] However, its Southwest is quite highlimestone mountains and there are manyclay, where was part of theHòa Bình plateau.
Besides, Kim Bảng is also the intersection of the national highways 21A, 21B, 21C and 38.
As of 2025 Kim Bảng town had apopulation of 145,744. In particular, all people are registered asKẻ Kinh.
Since 2010s, Kim Bảng town has been widely known in the world as one of the impressivespiritual tourist destinations.[6]
According to the documents of Hà Nam Communist Party Committee, the area of Kim Bảng town was the beginning of the Xuân Phả performance (trò Xuân Phả) from 1433. However, this theory is still in the debate.
