Parliamentary constituency in the United Kingdom, 1832–1918
Kilmarnock Burghs was adistrict of burghsconstituency of theHouse of Commons of theParliament of the United Kingdom from 1832 to 1918. It elected oneMember of Parliament (MP) by thefirst-past-the-post voting system.
Kilmarnock county constituency was created when the district of burghs constituency was abolished.
The constituency consisted of fiveparliamentary burghs:Kilmarnock in thecounty of Ayr,Dumbarton in thecounty of Dumbarton,Rutherglen in thecounty of Lanark andRenfrew andPort Glasgow in thecounty of Renfrew.
The Kilmarnock burgh was previously within theAyrshire constituency and Port Glasgow was previously within theRenfrewshire constituency. Dumbarton, Rutherglen and Renfrew were transferred fromGlasgow Burghs.
In 1918 the burgh of Kilmarnock was merged into the then newKilmarnockcounty constituency, which included areas previously withinNorth Ayrshire andSouth Ayrshire. The new Kilmarnock constituency consisted of "The county district of Kilmarnock, inclusive of all burghs situated therein except in so far as included in theAyr District of Burghs." The burgh of Dumbarton was transferred toDumbarton Burghs, the burgh of Port Glasgow was merged intoWest Renfrewshire, the burgh of Renfrew intoEast Renfrewshire and the burgh of Rutherglen into theRutherglen constituency.
