Kilian Island[1] formerlyElvira Island[2] is an uninhabited island in theQikiqtaaluk Region,Nunavut, Canada. It is located in theViscount Melville Sound, west ofStefansson Island, and north ofVictoria Island.
It is named for Bernhard Kilian, chief engineer of thePolar Bear who tried to salvage the burning shipElvira[3] in September 1913 when the two schooners (thePolar Bear and theElvira) were frozen in the ice of theBeaufort Sea, along with two ships belonging toRudolph Martin Anderson's southern team of theVilhjalmur Stefansson'sCanadian Arctic Expedition, 1913–1916.
