Khushab Tehsil (Saraiki:تحصِيل خُوشاب) is an administrative subdivision (tehsil) ofKhushab District in thePunjabprovince ofPakistan.[2]

History

Khushab Tehsil was an agricultural region with forests during theIndus Valley civilization. TheVedic period is characterized byIndo-Aryan culture that invaded fromCentral Asia and settled inPunjab region. TheKambojas,Daradas,Kaikayas, Madras,Pauravas,Yaudheyas,Malavas, Saindhavas andKurus invaded, settled and ruled ancientPunjab region. After overrunning theAchaemenid Empire in 331 BCE,Alexander marched into present-dayPunjab region with an army of 50,000. The Khushab region was ruled byMaurya Empire,Indo-Greek kingdom,Kushan Empire,Gupta Empire,White Huns,Kushano-Hephthalites,Turk and theHindu Shahi kingdoms.[citation needed]

In 997 CE,Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi, took over theGhaznavid dynasty empire established by his father,Sultan Sebuktegin. He conquered theShahis inKabul in 1005, and followed it by the conquests ofPunjab region. TheDelhi Sultanate and laterMughal Empire ruled the region. The Punjab region became predominantlyMuslim due tomissionarySufi saints whosedargahs dot the landscape ofPunjab region.

After the decline of theMughal Empire, theSikh Empire invaded and occupied Khushab Tehsil. The Muslims faced restrictions during the Sikh rule. During theBritish rule, Khushab district increased in population and importance. DuringBritish rule, Khushab was a tehsil of the oldShahpur District, the tehsil at that time had an area of 2,536 square miles (6,570 km2). The population according to the 1901 census was 161,885, a rise of over 10,000 since 1891.[3]

The predominantly Muslim population supportedAll-India Muslim League and thePakistan Movement. After theindependence ofPakistan in 1947, the minorityHindus andSikhs migrated toIndia while some of theMuslim refugees fromIndia settled in the Khushab Tehsil.
