TheKhentii Mountains (Mongolian:Хэнтийн нуруу) are amountain range in theTöv andKhentii Provinces in North EasternMongolia.
The mountain chain overlaps theKhan Khentii Strictly Protected Area and includes Mongolia'ssacred mountain,Burkhan Khaldun, which is associated with the origin ofGenghis Khan. The range forms the watershed between theArctic Ocean (viaLake Baikal) and thePacific Ocean basins. Rivers originating in the range include theOnon,Kherlen,Menza andTuul.
A northern extension of the Khentii Mountains forms a range of the same name which is part of theKhentei-Daur Highlands in theTransbaikalia Krai of Russia.[1]
The MongolGenghis Khan is thought to have chosen a resting place in the Khentii Mountains, called the Great Taboo, orIkh Khorig, by theMongols. The area is thought to be where Khan may be entombed.[2]
