Aroyal charter of KingGeorge IV of Georgia with hiskhelrtva. AD 1222. Kept at theNational Archives of Georgia inTbilisi.

Akhelrtva (Georgian:ხელრთვა,pronounced[χeɫɾtʰʷa]) is aGeorgian calligraphicsignature, monogram orseal, originally used by theGeorgian monarchs, queens consort, patriarchs, royalty and nobility,[1][2][3] universally used since the early eleventh century.[4]

The wordkhelrtva literally means 'todecorate, adorn or beautify with hand' in Georgian, kheli (ხელი) meaning a hand andrtva (რთვა) meaning to decorate or adorn.

Khelrtva signatures were written in one of the threeGeorgian scripts, mostly inNuskhuri andMkhedruli scripts, though themonograms especially the royal ones were written inAsomtavruli script. Every Georgian monarch had their own individualkhelrtva and was known asსაუფლოჲ ხელი (sauploy kheli) literally meaning 'Hand of the Lord'. The tradition ofkhelrtvas is still in use in Georgia.[5]
