Khasa Prakrit (also known asKhas Prakrit,Sanskrit Khasa,Himalayan Prakrit,Northern Prakrit,Khas Kura) is aPrakrit language of medieval South Asia and acommon ancestor language of thePahari languages, which includesNepali,Kumaoni,Jaunsari,Mandeali,Kangri andGarhwali languages.[1][2] It was commonly referred to as खश (Khaśa), खष (Khaṣa), and खशीर (Khaśīra) in theSanskrit texts.
Indian linguistSuniti Kumar Chatterji suggests that Nepali language developed from Khasa Prakrit.[3] Khas Prakrit is named after the speakers of language,Khas people, who live in theHimalayas.[4]
Khasa belongs to theIndo-European family of languages. Like otherIndo-Aryan languages, Khasa is a direct descendant of an early form ofVedic Sanskrit, throughShauraseni Prakrit andŚauraseni Apabhraṃśa (from Sanskritapabhraṃśa "corrupt").[5]
