Khanderao Dabhade (Marathi: खंडेराव दाभाडे) was the founding patriarch of theSarsenapatiMarathaDabhade family ofTalegaon Dabhade. He was the eldest of the two sons ofYesaji Dabhade (Bodyguard of the Maratha King,Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj) and the grandson of Bajaji Dabhade. He was conferred the hereditary title ofSardarSenapati (orSarsenapati,Commander-in-chief,Duke) byShahuji, the grandson of Shivaji on 11 January 1717.[1]
Khanderao Dabhade was an accomplishedSardar of theMaratha Empire. Most notably, from 1705 to 1716,Sardar Khanderao Dabhade led theMaratha Empire forces inBaroda. After his return toSatara, he was madeSenapati on 11 January 1717.
Khanderao Dabhade died at Juna Rajwada inTalegaon Dabhade nearPune, Maharashtra on 27 September 1729. His widow,SarsenapatiUmabai Dabhade, was the first and only woman to become Commander-in-Chief of the Maratha forces in 1732.
Khanderao Dabhade built theInduri Fort also famous as the 'Sarsenapati Dabhade Gadhi' at Induri in 1720–21.The Samadhi ofSarsenapati Khanderao Dabhade is situated at the Shrimant Sarsenapati Dabhade Baneshwar Mandir in Talegaon Dabhade.
Induri Fort is also famous as the 'Sarsenapati Dabhade Gaadi' (seat of power) at Induri in 1720–21. The Samadhi ofSarsenapati Khanderao Dabhade is situated at the Shrimant Sarsenapati Dabhade Baneshwar Mandir in Talegaon Dabhade. The current Srimant is Abhishek Mande Bhot, who ascended upon the 'Gaadi' in 1990 upon turning 15.

The Deccan College inPune, the third oldest educational institution in India, was founded by the Dakshina Fund bequeathed bySarsenapati Khanderao Dabhade. In 1821, the Dakshina Fund was named theHindoo College byMountstuart Elephistone, theGovernor ofBombay Presidency. In 1864, the college was renamed as Deccan College as it serves the wholeDeccan region of India.[2]
