Kevin Siegfried (born 1969) is an American composer. He has been composer-in-residence with theCapitol Hill Chorale since 2014, and teaches at theBoston Conservatory at Berklee.[1][2]
Siegfried earned his bachelor's degree atAntioch College. He then attended theUniversity of Iowa, where he received a master's degree in theory and composition; among his professors wasDonald Martin Jenni.[3] He completed a doctorate in composition at theNew England Conservatory of Music, where his instructors includedLee Hyla,Michael Gandolfi, andDaniel Pinkham. He also studied in France and in India, where he received aStanley Fellowship to study South Indian classical music withSriram Parasuram.[4] He has received grants and awards fromASCAP, theNational Endowment for the Arts, and theNew Hampshire State Council on the Arts, among other organizations. He currently lives inAndover, Massachusetts.[1] At the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, he is a Professor of Theater, and Coordinator of Theory and New Works. In 2017, he was the winner of Berklee's Distinguished Faculty Award.[5]
Siegfried is especially noted for his work with the music of theShakers, which he first encountered in 1995 during a visit to the Shaker village atPleasant Hill, Kentucky. He has since produced many choral arrangements of Shaker songs,[6] and has composed a cantata,Angel of Light, for which they served as a basis.[1] He has been associated for some time withCanterbury Shaker Village in New Hampshire,[7][8][9] andSabbathday Lake Shaker Village in Maine, as of 2017 the home of the last living Shakers.[10] Siegfried's arrangements of Shaker music have been recorded by theTudor Choir and theDale Warland Singers.[11][12][13] He has also written works for theNashua Symphony Orchestra in Nashua, New Hampshire.[14][15]
