American mathematician (born 1941)
Kenneth C. Millett (born 1941) is a professor of mathematics at theUniversity of California, Santa Barbara .[ 1] His research concernslow-dimensional topology ,knot theory , and the applications of knot theory toDNA structure;[ 2] his initial is the "M" in the name of theHOMFLY polynomial .[ 3]
Millett graduated from theMassachusetts Institute of Technology in 1963 with a bachelor's degree in mathematics.[ 1] He earned his Ph.D. in 1967 from theUniversity of Wisconsin under the supervision of Edward R. Fadell.[ 4] After short-term instructor positions at theUniversity of California, Los Angeles and MIT, he joined the UCSB faculty in 1969 and was promoted to professor in 1979.[ 1]
Millett won theCarl B. Allendoerfer Award of theMathematical Association of America in 1989 and theChauvenet Prize in 1991 for a paper on knot theory withW. B. R. Lickorish .[ 5] [ 6] He became afellow of theAmerican Association for the Advancement of Science in 2000.[ 1] In 2012, he became one of the inaugural fellows of theAmerican Mathematical Society .[ 7]
