Keith Robert Dorney (born December 3, 1957) is an American former professionalfootball player who was anoffensive tackle for nine seasons in theNational Football League (NFL) from 1979 to 1987.
He playedcollege football for thePenn State Nittany Lions, earning consensusAll-American honors in 1978. In the1979 NFL draft, Dorney was selected in the first round by theDetroit Lions, where he played for his entire professional career.
Dorney was born inAllentown, Pennsylvania. He grew up inMacungie, Pennsylvania in theLehigh Valley region of easternPennsylvania. He playedhigh school football atEmmaus High School inEmmaus, Pennsylvania,[1] which competed in theEast Penn Conference and is known for its success in producing collegiate and NFL football talent.
In his autobiography,Black and Honolulu Blue: In the Trenches of the NFL, Dorney dramatically recounts playing for Emmaus, including one play in which he simultaneously tackled the opposing quarterback and running back during a handoff in a goal line stand. It resulted in a seriousconcussion that produced some minoranterograde amnesia.
Dorney attendedPennsylvania State University, where he played for coachJoe Paterno'sNittany Lions football team from1975 through1978.[2]
As a senior in 1978, Dorney was recognized as both a consensus first-teamAll-American[2] and anAcademic All-American. He earned aBachelor of Science in insurance and real estate from Penn State in 1979, and aMaster of Education from theUniversity of San Francisco. In 2005, in tribute of his play at Penn State, Dorney was inducted into theCollege Football Hall of Fame.[2]
Following his Penn State football career, Dorney entered the1979 NFL draft and was selected by theDetroit Lions in the first round with the 10th overall selection. He played in the NFL for nine years, from1979 to1987, and played bothoffensive guard andoffensive tackle for the Lions.[2]
Dorney was also the offensive captain of the Detroit Lions from 1983 to 1987 and was selected to the1982 Pro Bowl.[2]
Dorney's NFL career was highlighted by his role as a lead blocker for NFL rushing greatBilly Sims, who rushed for 5,106 yards over his five-year career with the Lions.
Dorney's autobiography,Black and Honolulu Blue: In the Trenches of the NFL, chronicles his life and football career.[3][4]
From 2003 to 2006, Dorney was on the faculty ofCardinal Newman High School inSanta Rosa, California, where he taught freshmanEnglish. Dorney andHall of Fame quarterbackJoe Montana both provided Cardinal Newman with periodic coaching support.
