The town is known for being the location of the last sighting of apassenger pigeon in the wild, byTheodore Roosevelt.[2] Roosevelt had "the firstCamp David", calledPine Knot, here from 1905.

Mount Pleasant Baptist Church is a historically black church in Keene. In December 1974, the pastor was Rev. Frank Montague.[4] The church held a Christmas Bazaar on Saturday December 14 of that year, sponsored by the Keene Birthday Club.[4]
