Kawana Waters is an urban centre on theSunshine Coast inQueensland, Australia, betweenCaloundra andMaroochydore along theCoral Sea coast.[1] It was originally the estate development name and has passed into common usage, but it is not officially a town nor alocality. The official suburbs (listed below) are connected by theNicklin Way arterial road. It is sometimes abbreviated toKawana, which is a suburb ofRockhampton.
Many shopping and sporting facilities, includingKawana Shoppingworld are located in the Kawana Waters estate area.
Kawana Waters is a narrow urban area bounded roughly by Mooloolah River to the north and northwest, the ocean to the east andCurrimundi Lake to the south.

According toRex Ingamells,Kawana is an Aboriginal word meaningwildflowers.[1] Construction work on Kawana Island commenced in 1960, with Nicklin Way officially opened in 1965.[2] The area was officially named Kawana Waters on 1 November 1968, having previously been known as Kawana Island.[1]
Earthmoving activities conducted during the development of the area uncovered more than 100 pieces ofunexploded ordnance between 1970 and 1995.[3] They were remnants of World War IIlive-fire training exercises.[3]
Along with a number of other regional Australian newspapers owned byNews Corp Australia, theKawana/Maroochy Weekly newspaper ceased publication in June 2020.[4]
The suburbs within the Kawana Waters estate area are served byKinetic Group, who operate a bus interchange atKawana Shoppingworld. Bus routes 600–619 connect Kawana Waters withCaloundra,Maroochydore,Buderim,Landsborough andNambour.[5]
Landsborough andNambour stations on theNambour / Gympie North Line offer regular services toBrisbane, operated by Queensland RailCitytrain. There are also coach services from Kawana Waters toBrisbane Airport.[6]
