Katherine Lee (born September 14, 1981)[1] is an Americancookbook author, televisionfood critic, actor, chef, andnovelist born in West Virginia. She has worked in several restaurants and published two cookbooks. She served as a contributor to several magazines and TV shows, includingIron Chef America, an American cooking show competition, where she was a judge in 2007. She is a co-host ofFood Network's talk showThe Kitchen, and the host ofCooking Channel'sBeach Bites with Katie Lee.

Early life and education

Lee was raised inMilton, West Virginia.[2] Lee studied journalism and food science atMiami University inOxford, Ohio,[3] where she graduated in 2003.[4] While there she was a member ofKappa Alpha Theta.[5] She spent a semester abroad inFlorence,Italy at The British Institute.[6][7]

Career

Lee has worked in several restaurants and gourmet food and wine stores. In 2003, she helped to open Jeff and Eddy's Restaurant where she served as the house fishmonger.[7]

In July 2005, Lee created thefoodie website OliveAndPeach.com with partner Aleishall Girard. The web site ceased updating in September 2006.

In 2006, she hosted the first season ofBravo'sTop Chef. Subsequently, Bravo replaced her withPadma Lakshmi.[8][9] She later returned as a guest judge onTop Chef All Stars, Episode 2 ("Night at the Museum") in 2010.

Lee's first cookbook,The Comfort Table, was published by Simon & Schuster.[10] In October 2009, Simon & Schuster released her second cookbookThe Comfort Table: Recipes for Everyday Occasions[11]

In June 2011, Lee released her first novel,Groundswell, about a woman recovering fromdivorce who finds the healing power ofsurfing.[12]

Lee served as a food and lifestyle contributor forThe Early Show and has appeared onExtra as a special correspondent. Additionally, she is a contributing editor toGotham magazine, and her culinary and lifestyle column, "Katie's Kitchen", is published weekly in its sister magazineHamptons.[13] Lee has also appeared onPaula's Party,Martha,Today,The Early Show,The Nate Berkus Show,Rachael Ray Show, andFox News. In 2007, she was a judge onIron Chef America.[13]

Lee is a member of theFeeding America Entertainment Council.[14] She previously sat on the council of Chefs for Humanity, a group that provides humanitarian aid worldwide. She has also volunteered forLes Dames d'Escoffier, an organization that educates and mentors women in theculinary profession.[15]

Lee appeared on the video blogWine Library TV withGary Vaynerchuk on May 8, 2009.[16]

Lee has been a guest judge onBeat Bobby Flay many times, including on July 21, 2016, for a special "Ladies Night" episode.[17]

Lee is a co-host ofFood Network's talk showThe Kitchen,[18] and theCooking Channel'sBeach Bites with Katie Lee.[19] Lee has also appeared as a judge on Food Network'sHalloween Baking Championship.[20]

Personal life

Lee metBilly Joel at the rooftop bar atThe Peninsula New York while visiting for a weekend.[21] After dating for a year, she and Joel married at his home inOyster Bay,Long Island, on October 2, 2004.Alexa Ray Joel, Billy Joel's daughter from his marriage toChristie Brinkley, served asmaid of honor.[22]

After nearly five years of marriage, Joel and Lee separated in June 2009.[23]

On March 22, 2018, Lee got engaged totelevision producer Ryan Biegel at La Réserve Hotel and Spa inParis.[24]

On February 26, 2020, Lee announced on Instagram that she was expecting her first child.[25] On September 2, 2020, Lee gave birth to a daughter.[26]
