Katherine B. Johnson (born March 26, 1981)[1][2] served as thepersonal secretary toUnited States PresidentBarack Obama from 2009 to 2011.[3][4]

Personal life

Johnson grew up inBethesda, Maryland, and moved with her parents toBrookline, Massachusetts, in 1999 before enteringWellesley College. She is the oldest of three children of Dr. Bruce E. Johnson, head ofthoraciconcology atDana–Farber Cancer Institute, and Georgia M. Johnson, a management consultant and anelected Town Meeting member in Brookline.[citation needed]

Johnson graduated fromWellesley College in 2003[5] with aBachelor of Arts degree inpolitical science.[citation needed] Prior to her post as personal secretary to the president, Johnson wasRahm Emanuel's special assistant for two years when he led theDemocratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and also served as Barack Obamacampaign managerDavid Plouffe's assistant.[5]

Johnson was one of several junior staffers who left the White House in 2011 to attendHarvard Law School.[6] Her last day as secretary was June 10, 2011.[7]

Post-secretarial career

Johnson returned to the White House as a Counselor in theOffice of Management and Budget.[8] She graduated from Harvard Law School in 2014 and is currently a partner in theWashington, D.C. office ofJenner & Block.[9]
