Kathiparai Junction is a major road junction in the Indian city ofChennai, capital of thesouthern Indian state ofTamil Nadu. Situated at theAlandur area, between the intersection of theGrand Southern Trunk Road,Inner Ring Road,Anna Salai andMount-Poonamallee Road. Kathipara flyover is the largestcloverleaf flyover in India as well as South Asia.[2][3]

Construction

The junction used to be aroundabout with a statue of the Indian prime ministerJawaharlal Nehru. A cloverleafgrade separator was constructed as part of theNHDP to ease traffic congestion at the junction. The structure was built at an estimated project cost of486 crore (US$57 million) with an initial deadline of March 2007. It is the first of three grade separators being built on the InnerRing Road to improve connectivity between the variousNational Highways radiating from the city, the other two being the one onKoyambedu junction (NH 4) near theChennai Mofussil Bus Terminus and the one atPadi Junction (NH 205). The main span of the flyover connecting Inner Ring Road and GST Road was opened to traffic on 9 April 2008 and the entire section was opened to the public on 26 October 2008. Landscaping work worth150 lakh (US$180,000) on the 40,000 sq m area will be taken up afterChennai Metro work is completed.[4]

Kathipara Urban Square

Kathipara Urban Square, a metro rail initiative to build facilities under the clover leaf loops of the Kathipara Junction, is being developed by a private contractor. It has a bus terminal whereMTC and out- station buses can halt to pick up and drop passengers, kids play area, food court, open air theater, retail shops, office space, washrooms, vehicular parking facility, kiosks, ATMs and facilities for horticulture spread across an area of 54,400 sqm.[5]

This development is estimated to cost around140 million and is funded by theChennai Metropolitan Development Authority and implementation and maintenance will be taken care of by theChennai Metro Rail.[6]
