Kate McKinnon Berthold [ 1] (born January 6, 1984)[ 2] is an American actress and comedian. She was a cast member on theNBC sketch comedy seriesSaturday Night Live from 2012 to 2022, where she became known for hercharacter work andcelebrity impressions . For her work on the series, she was nominated for tenPrimetime Emmy Awards , including one forOutstanding Original Music and Lyrics and nine forOutstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series , winning in2016 and2017 .
McKinnon starred in theLogo sketch comedy seriesThe Big Gay Sketch Show (2007–2010), voiced lead roles in thePBS Kids animated seriesNature Cat (2015–2024) and theNetflix animated seriesThe Magic School Bus Rides Again (2017–2021), and portrayedCarole Baskin in thePeacock miniseriesJoe vs. Carole (2022).[ 3] [ 1]

McKinnon was born and raised onLong Island in the town ofSea Cliff, New York ,[ 1] [ 4] to Laura Campbell, a parent educator, and Michael Thomas Berthold, anarchitect .[ 5] [ 6] She has a younger sister, comedian Emily Lynne, with whom she has collaborated on theAudible seriesHeads Will Roll ,[ 7] as well as the digital seriesNotary Publix .[ 1] [ 6] Their father died when McKinnon was 18 years old.[ 1] [ 5]
As a child, McKinnon played several instruments. She started playing thepiano when she was five years old, thecello at age 12, and taught herself how to play theguitar at 15.[ 8]
McKinnon's knack for accents began when she was in fifth grade. She auditioned to be "the queen of reading week" and used an English accent. In an interview withRolling Stone , she says, "I think the genesis of my entire life, probably, was the smiles I elicited doing this British accent. I've been chasing that dragon ever since."[ 9]
She graduated fromNorth Shore High School in 2002,[ 10] [ 3] and fromColumbia University in 2006 with a degree in theatre. There she co-founded a comedy group, Tea Party, that focused on musicalimprov comedy .[ 1] [ 11] At Columbia, she starred in threeVarsity shows : V109Dial D for Deadline , V110Off-Broadway and V111The Sound of Muses .[ 1] [ 12] [ 13] Her cast and crewmates included future actorsJenny Slate andGrace Parra , directorsTze Chun andGreta Gerwig , andThe Onion managing editorPeter Koechley .[ 14] [ 15] [ 16] She was also a member of Prangstgrüp, a student comedy group which set up and recorded elaborate college pranks.[ 17]
In 2007, McKinnon joined the original cast ofLogo TV 'sThe Big Gay Sketch Show , where she was a cast member for all three seasons.[ 18]
Since 2008, she has performed live sketch comedy regularly at theUpright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City.[ 18] [ 19] She has also worked as a voice-over actress, and has voiced characters for series such asThe Venture Bros. ,Robotomy , andUgly Americans .[ 19] [ 20] In 2009, McKinnon won a LogoNewNowNext Award for Best Rising Comic.[ 21] She was nominated for anECNY Emerging Comic Award in 2010.[ 18] In 2014, she appeared in theKennedy Center Honors as part of a tribute toLily Tomlin . In 2016, she starred in the rebootGhostbusters , alongsideMelissa McCarthy , and fellowSNL cast membersKristen Wiig andLeslie Jones .[ 22] In 2023, she played Weird Barbie in theBarbie movie.
McKinnon has made appearances as a voice actress in series likeThe Simpsons (as Hettie in "Gal of Constant Sorrow ") andFamily Guy (as Karen / Heavy Flo in season 14, episode 6 "Peter's Sister ", and additional voices in other episodes), and films such asFinding Dory ,The Angry Birds Movie ,Ferdinand andDC League of Super-Pets . McKinnon voiced Fiona Frizzle inThe Magic School Bus Rides Again , a continuation ofThe Magic School Bus children's series, from 2017 to 2020.[ 23] Since 2015, she has voiced Squeeks in thePBS Kids seriesNature Cat , starring with fellowSNL cast membersTaran Killam andBobby Moynihan .
In 2025, she will co-star in the filmThe Roses ,[ 24] and do voicework for the upcomingMinecraft Movie .
Saturday Night Live [ edit ] McKinnon joined the cast ofSaturday Night Live as a featured player on April 7, 2012, following a March 28, 2012 report of her being hired.[ 25] [ 26] She was promoted to repertory status inseason 39 in 2013.[ 27] [ 28]
In 2013, McKinnon was nominated for anEmmy Award for Best Supporting Actress, Comedy.[ 29] McKinnon won the 2014American Comedy Award for Best Supporting Actress, TV for her work onSNL .[ 30] In 2014, she was nominated for anEmmy Award forOutstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series ,[ 31] as well as forOutstanding Original Music and Lyrics along with four of her colleagues for the song "(Do It On My) Twin Bed".[ 32] She was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for the second time in 2015.[ 33] She won the following year, becoming the first actor fromSNL to win the award sinceDana Carvey in 1993.[ 34] [ 35]
McKinnon began appearing asHillary Clinton on the series leading up to the2016 presidential election . The real Clinton appeared alongside her in a sketch during the show'sseason 41 premiere.[ 36] McKinnon has said that her impression of Hillary Clinton comes from a deep admiration, and that she "unequivocally want[ed] her to win" the2016 presidential election .[ 37] On November 12, 2016, which was the first show after Clinton's loss in the election, she reprised the role to open the show with a solo performance of "Hallelujah " byLeonard Cohen , whose death was announced two days before her performance.[ 38] After the election, McKinnon began to impersonateKellyanne Conway alongsideAlec Baldwin asDonald Trump . On February 11, 2017, she debuted her impression ofElizabeth Warren duringWeekend Update andJeff Sessions in the cold open.

She has been nominated for sevenPrimetime Emmy Awards , including one forOutstanding Original Music and Lyrics and six forOutstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series , winning in 2016 and 2017.
McKinnon's return toseason 46 made her the show's longest tenured female cast member, surpassing her cast matesCecily Strong andAidy Bryant by five episodes.[ 40] [ 41] Bryant and McKinnon left the series afterseason 47 .[ 42] They had both planned on leaving at the end of the45th season in 2020, but theCOVID-19 pandemic changed their plans and they left at the end of season 47 in 2022.[ 43] [ 44] Strong passed McKinnon's record with the December 17, 2022 episode ofseason 48 .[ 45] [ 46]
Saturday Night Live characters[ edit ] Olya Povlatsky , a Russian woman who voices her opinions on current events, comparing them to the outrageous struggles she faces in her village. She also appeared in a cold open withBeck Bennett asVladimir Putin reading a prepared statement against her will.[ 47] Sheila Sovage , a heavily intoxicated woman at a bar who meets and hooks up with a heavily intoxicated man or woman, played by the host, at closing time.[ 48] [ 49] Jodi Cork , The Art of the Encounter and Women in the Workplace co-host with Donna Fingerneck (played byCecily Strong ).Barbara DeDrew, a lesbian volunteer at the cat shelter Whiskers R We.[ 50] Deenie, a.k.a. "Somebody's Mom", a middle-aged woman who attempts to recap shows she's been watching, but only knows the characters by self-applied nicknames, such as "Big Boobs" and "Mustache." She is always eating some foul concoction out of Tupperware, such as Brussels sprouts and imitation crab, which generally revoltsWeekend Update anchorColin Jost .[ 51] Mrs. Santini, an apartment dweller who writes passive-aggressive notes to her neighbors. Originally performed as Effie Villalopolus onComedy Bang! Bang! Colleen Rafferty, a 27-year old woman (despite looking middle-aged, implicitly due to her repeated traumas) who appears on panels with two friends. They recount their experience of a shared paranormal event, such as being abducted by aliens. The other two friends always have an idyllic experience, while Rafferty instead experiences significant trauma.[ 52] Les Dykawitz, a lesbian cop from the 1970s who works for the Chicago Police Department along with her partner Chubina Fatzarelli (played byAidy Bryant ) in "Dyke & Fats."[ 53] Debette Goldry , a senile elderly actress whose harsh experiences with being an actress in old Hollywood are more outrageous than what modern actresses have gone through.A member of Woodbridge High School's theatre troupe that performs solely aboutsocial justice issues they know very little about. Noelle LeSoup , the co-host of the French show "America's Funniest Cats" who appears on the American version of the show along with Joelle LaRue (played byCecily Strong ).Shud, a crassmermaid who is based on ablobfish , and makes sexual advances on an unfortunate marooned sailor.[ 54] Dr. Wayne Wenowdis, a strangely accented middle-aged medical doctor, who debuted in 2020, as part of theWeekend Update segment withColin Jost .[ 55] Madame Vivelda, a fortune teller who predicts people's 2020 experiences.[ 56] Saturday Night Live impressions[ edit ] McKinnon co-created and co-stars in the web seriesNotary Publix with her sister Emily Lynne.[ 105] [ 106] In addition toAidy Bryant (who stars in the series), McKinnon'sSNL co-starsBeck Bennett ,Jay Pharoah andSNL writerPaula Pell all guest-starred in the six-episode first season of the web series.[ 105]
McKinnon and Lynne also created and released the fantasy-comedyAudible audio seriesHeads Will Roll , which premiered in May 2019.[ 7] The show features guest appearances fromMeryl Streep ,Peter Dinklage ,Audra McDonald ,Bob the Drag Queen ,Queer Eye's Fab Five , andTim Gunn . McKinnon at the National Book Awards ceremony Her absence from the first seven episodes ofSaturday Night Live ' s47th season was due to her filming thePeacock miniseriesJoe vs. Carole , where she stars asCarole Baskin . It premiered March 3, 2022.[ 111]
In February 2024, McKinnon announced the forthcoming release of a young adult novel, aimed at those in middle school, to be calledThe Millicent Quibb School of Etiquette for Young Ladies of Mad Science . The work would focus on events among three sisters from the Porch family and themad scientist in the fictional town of Antiquarium. The release was scheduled for October 2024.[ 112] [ 113]
In November 2024, McKinnon served as the host of theNational Book Awards in New York City.[ 114]
While attending Columbia University, she dated future journalistBari Weiss .[ 115] McKinnon was in a relationship with photographer and actress Jackie Abbott from 2016 to 2019. While presentingEllen DeGeneres with theCarol Burnett Award at the2020 Golden Globe Awards , McKinnon opened up about being alesbian and thanked DeGeneres for making it less scary for her to accept her sexual orientation while watching her TV sitcomEllen .[ 116]
She does not have any social media accounts, fearing that she will "misrepresent [her] real feelings".[ 117]
