Karl-Heinz Schröter (born 26 October 1954) is a Germanpolitician (Social Democratic Party). He is the current State Minister of the Interior government of Minister-PresidentDietmar Woidke ofBrandenburg. He previously served as district administrator of theOberhavel district (countryBrandenburg) and was a member of the twelfthGerman Bundestag.
Karl-Heinz Schroter was born on 26 October 1954 inFrankfurt (Oder). After attending aPolytechnic Secondary School and Advanced High School, he received the 1973Abitur. Subsequently he served until 1975, hisMilitary service. Schroeter studied at theUniversity of Rostock, and graduated in 1980 as a graduateengineer with a degree in Agricultural Engineering. Then he was up to 1990 working in the maintenance of agricultural engineering, most recently as Technical Director in theVolkseigenes Gut Animal Production Berlin.
Schröter 1989 was a member of theSocial Democratic Party in the GDR, now Social Democratic Party (SPD), and a year later became chairman of the SPD District Association Oranienburg. In May 1990, Schröter was selected as Chief Executive of the Oranienburg circle. From 1990 to 1994 he was also aMember of the Bundestag as a directly elected representative of the constituency Oranienburg - Nauen[1] In 1994, Schröter as Chief Executive of the newly formed County Upper Havel and Chairman of the County Association and Vice-President of Brandenburgcounty[2] 2001 saw his re-election as district administrator.[2]
In relation to a possible reorganisation of the Federal Territory, Schroeter in 2000 appealed for the creation of a large north-eastern state. This should consist of the countiesBerlin,Brandenburg,Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania andSaxony-Anhalt formed withSchwerin as the capital.[3] In 2006 Schroeter was a candidate for the post of chairman of the SPD in Brandenburg, from whichMatthias Platzeck withdrew.[4] In 2007 Schröter demanded further decentralization of school policy in Brandenburg education as a key reform. Cities as education providers should also get the personal responsibility for the teachers[5] In connection with the construction of theBerlin Brandenburg International Airport Schröter pleaded in 2008 for keeping openBerlin-Tegel Airport, otherwise, he feared a negative impact on economic development of the Upper Havel.[6]
In November 2009, Schröter was re-elected by thecounty council as a district administrator.[7] His new eight-year term will begin in March 2010.[8] The parliamentary groups ofCDU SPD andFDP previously had an application rejected in the district council, for a change to the BrandenburgCommunal Constitution, to choose the new district administrator directly by citizens. Some group members expressed a direct election was too risky for them.[9] Schröter, in 2007, described as completely unnecessary, the direct election of district administrators in Brandenburg.[10]
Since 2014, Schröter has been serving as State Minister of the Interior in the government of Minister-PresidentDietmar Woidke ofBrandenburg. As one of his state's representatives at theBundesrat, he serves on the Committee on Internal Affairs and the Defense Committee.
Schröter is criticized by trade-union members for his support for plans in 2012 to provide merchandise-coupons to political refugees instead of money in cash.[11]
Schröter isCatholic, married and has two children. He lives inHohen Neuendorf and is a Marathon runner.[1][2]
