Orangi District (formerlyKarachi West District,Urdu:ضلع اورنگی; also Karachi Gharbi کراچی غربی) is an administrative district ofKarachi Division, created in 1972. It is located in the western part ofKarachi in the province ofSindh, Pakistan with a population of 2.67 million.
As per the Sindh Local Government Act, 2021, Sindh government replaced the previous seven District Municipal Corporations (DMCs) with 26 towns, each with its own municipal committee. Karachi West District has three towns.[5][6][7][8][9][10]
Orangi District (formerly Karachi West District) was created in 1972 as a district ofKarachi Division. The District was abolished in 2000 byCity District Government Karachi. The federal government introduced local government reforms in the year 2000, which eliminated the previous "third tier of government" (administrative divisions) and replaced it with the fourth tier (districts). The effect in Karachi was the dissolution of the formerKarachi Division in 2001, and the merging of its five districts to form a newCity District Government Karachi with eighteen autonomous constituent towns as a resultKarachi West District was divided into five towns namely:
On 11 July 2011, theSindh Government restored againKarachi West District.[11]
Lyari Town became part ofKarachi South District in 2015. New subdivisions Manghopir and Mominabad were added to Karachi West District.
In 2020,Keamari District was carved out fromKarachi West District. This resulted inBaldia Town,Keamari Town,Mauripur Town andSITE Town becoming being part ofKeamari District.[12][13][14]
As of 2023,Karachi West District was renamedOrangi District.

As of the2023 census, Karachi West district has 464,756 households and a population of 2,679,380.[16] The district has a sex ratio of 112.00 males to 100 females and a literacy rate of 67.43%: 69.75% for males and 64.79% for females.[3][17] 673,559 (25.14% of the surveyed population) are under 10 years of age.[18] 2,430,428 (90.71%) live in urban areas.[3]

The majority religion is Islam, with 2,619,785 of the population.Christianity 50,192,Hindus 7,744,Ahmadiyya 361, Schedule castes 105,Sikhs 603,Parsis 222 & others 368.[19]

Orangi District is located in the north-west part ofKarachi Division. North border of Orangi District is with Gadap Town ofMalir District, East border of Orangi District is withNew Karachi Town &North Nazimabad Town ofNazimabad District, West border of Orangi District is with Mauripur Town ofKeamari District, south-west border is withBaldia Town of Kaeamari District, south-east border is withSITE Town ofKeamari District.
