In the2006 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election[13] Rabindranath Mitra ofCPI(M) won the 174 Kalyanpur assembly seat defeating Asit Mitra ofCongress.Asit Mitra of Congress won the seat defeating Rabindranath Mitra of CPI(M) in2001[12] and Maqsud Ahmed of CPI(M) in 1996.[11] Nitai Charan Adak of CPI(M) defeated Sakti Sadhan Chowdhury of Congress in 1991,[10] Asit Mitra representing Congress in 1987[9] andICS in 1982,[8] and Arabinda Roy ofJanata Party in 1977.[7][14]
