Kale District (also calledKalemyo District) is the westernmost district inSagaing Division ofMyanmar (Burma).[1]
Its administrative center is the city ofKalay (Kalaymyo). The district consists of three townships;
To the west Kale District bordersFalam District and Tedim District ofChin State in the west, to the northMawlaik District, to the eastShwebo District, to the southMonywa District and finallyGangaw District ofMagway Division.
The area is supported by rice farming, fisheries and timbering. The main towns areKalaymyo,Kalewa andMingin.
Kale District is one of the most affluent Christian areas of Burma. 99% of inhabitants in Tahan areChristian even though Burma is aBuddhist country and 90% of the national population are Buddhist. Only 4% of the Burmese population are Christian. Kale has 116BuddhistMonasteries, 508Churches, aMosque, twoHindu Temples, two BuddhistSeminary forNuns, five Buddhist nunneries and ajoss house (Chinese communal temple). There are over 50churches in Tahan also. This is the only place in Burma that you can see a church on every street corner and where Christmas is celebrated.[2]
