KJKJ first signed on in 1985 as "Rock 108" with analbum-oriented rock (AOR), a predecessor to today'sclassic rock format, similar to that of the well-knownKQRS-FM inMinneapolis, Minnesota. During the early 1990s, Rock 108 tweaked toclassic rock, the descendant of the AOR format. In 1995, The BigDogz debuted as theirsatirical news morning show, sometimes being compared to morning shows such as the syndicatedBob and Tom,Tom Barnard ofKQRS-FM inMinneapolis-St. Paul, andHoward Stern, and has been the top-rated morning show for many years.[citation needed]Clear Channel Communications bought out several radio stations including KJ108 in 2000, and KJ108's format evolved into a broad basedrock formatted station; playing a mix ofclassic rock andmainstream rock from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, to the latest fromFive Finger Death Punch,Pop Evil,Seether, and other mainstreamactive rock artists. The music consists of a mix of today's heavy metal, alternative and hardactive rock. The station is known to play newactive rock as soon as it reaches radio. KJ108 also plays album tracks not heard on radio reminiscent ofalbum oriented rock as it one of the largest libraries ofclassic,recurrent mainstream, andactive rock in the Great Plains. The station with the Big Dogs morning show creates a mass appeal rock station and can be heard through most of eastern North Dakota and Northwest Minnesota.
