Küresünni is aTurkic tribe that inhabits the territory ofSalmas,Urmia,Khoy,Maku inIran andVan Province in Turkey. It is believed that they descend fromChepni tribesmen who were settled in the region by theOttoman Empire to serve against theQizilbash. Küresünni, from theShafi'imadh'hab, continue to be ferventSunnis. In the southwest of Khoy, there areKurdicized groups of Küresünni Turks.[2]
The origin of the name is unclear. The people themselves have given various etymologies, such as it originating from a man named Kör Hasan (blind Hasan), from the city of Giresun, or from the termKhorasani.[1]
